Prospective practicum education site

Thank you for your interest in our Practicum Education program

Our students are highly sought-after and are a valuable resource for our practicum partners. Please fill out the form below to be considered as a practicum site location.

The practicum experience is a key component in the educational journey of our students.

We continue to secure new learning opportunities for them as we partner with local, national and global organizations. We need public and non-profit organizations that provide human services supporting diverse populations to create hands-on learning opportunities for our undergraduate and graduate level students.

As a practicum placement site, your organization must be able to provide direct practice opportunities and experiences in a range of generalist and specialized/clinical social work activities. You must be able to provide the space and resources for students to complete roles and assignments, and allow practicum supervisors the release time to provide orientation, ongoing training and weekly hourly supervision.

Our social work programs are generalist-focused, preparing bachelor and master level students for professional careers in the field. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), our accrediting body, has determined nine competencies and accompanying practice behaviors for social work students.

Practicum sites must offer learning opportunities in the nine core competencies of social work

As a requirement of the Kent School, students must demonstrate core competencies in a practicum setting at university approved practicum sites.

Practicum sites must offer learning opportunities in the following competencies areas:

  • Competency 1: Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior
  • Competency 2: Engage diversity and difference in practice
  • Competency 3: Advance human rights and social, economic and environmental justice
  • Competency 4: Engage in practice-informed research and research-informed practice
  • Competency 5: Engage in policy practice
  • Competency 6: Engage with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities
  • Competency 7: Assess individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities
  • Competency 8: Intervene with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities
  • Competency 9: Evaluate practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.

Practicum setting may have a specific focus, but each approved practicum setting must be able to provide some learning opportunities for students with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities where the student can demonstrate the skills in competencies 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Primary Education Opportunities for students: (select all that applies)

Some of our students have special focuses or needs. Please check those provided by your agency that can assist us in meeting these needs. (optional)

Does your organization employ a social worker whose degree is from an accredited college or university with two years post-graduate experience who can supervise a student*?

*=Per CSWE, MSSW students must be supervised by an individual with an MSW/MSSW degree and two years post-graduate experience. BSW students can be supervised by an individual who has a MSSW who meets the criteria above or an individual with a BSW degree who has two years of post-undergraduate experience.

If your agency does not employ a social work professional who meet these criteria, does the agency have access to a community-based social worker or an agency volunteer who would possibly be able to fill this role? (optional)

If yes, the agency would still need to provide the student with a seasoned staff member (named the Task Supervisor) to guide the student’s on-site learning tasks/responsibilities. If the agency does not employ an on-site social worker or does not have access to a community member/volunteer who can supervise, this can be discussed further with the Kent School Practicum Office.
